Prowl #2

Relentless

Rate this book
My alphas think they know everything about me, and that everything between us is amazing.

But I’m hiding something from them, and if I don’t find a way to tell them about my past, we won’t have a future together.

I thought that things would be easier now that I’m not being stalked, but if anything, things are harder. I’m anxious how my alphas will see me when they find out about my past, and worried about the life changes that are coming.

What also concerns me is this new ‘family’ in town that means trouble, but maybe I’m just looking for problems that aren’t my responsibility. Especially once my mother, the original source of my problems, suddenly becomes keen on renewing our relationship and delivering the apology she thinks I’ve been waiting for.

It’s starting to feel like I can’t tell up from down anymore, and even when the stability and comfort I crave from my alphas is within reach, there seem to be strings attached.

I have choices to make, that’s for damn sure, and I can only hope they’re the right ones.

Aww hell. I'm a bit sad, and not in a "I just finished an amazing book and need more" kinda way, which is what I felt after finishing the first book. I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw that the book released a day early cause it gave me the opportunity to read it today, and seeing as this was literally my most anticipated release, I dove right in. Now I kinda wish I had waited and saved my disappointment for the next year.

To start with the positives:

✅ I still absolutely adored Alek and her alphas; she was and still is an absolutely amazing badass, and I loved the way she opened up to her alphas and the way they took care of her

✅ I had feared that her not opening up about her family was gonna be dragged out forever, so I was pleasantly surprised that she chose to share her story with her alphas willingly and rather early in the story

✅ the humour!! several instances where I genuinely laughed out loud, especially when the alphas were talking to/teasing each other

✅ loved to get to know a bit more about Hades' family/background (even though the majority of them were assholes)

Unfortunately, that was kinda it, and the problems I had with this novel were plenty;

❌ I could not believe the amount of mistakes in this novel - I don't think this was proofread by anyone. Most prominent were missing/misplaced quotation marks, misspelled words (or commas right inside of a word), a few grammatical errors I struggled with and even some random letters right between sentences. I don't mind a few of such mistakes, but after about half of the book I was truly scratching my head, cause I read two other (amazing!) books by this author before and never noticed anything like this. Especially towards the end there were plenty of obvious missspellings, and it really took me out of fully enjoying the story.

❌ I honestly didn't really care about the whole politics plot point, and just like in the first novel when Alek was chasing this guy down to protect Isabelle, I didn't care for the way she was sucked into the political conflict here. In the first novel I didn't mind cause the relationship between Alek and her alphas was at the forefront, but here not even that could distract me from the boredom of that storyline, cause the major thing I had issues with was their relationship:

❌ I unfortunately really didn't feel the connection between Alek and the others in this sequel. Which doesn't really make sense, seeing as they took some really big steps in their relationship. I think what I was missing were scenes of her connecting with them and furthering their relationship in a more substantial way, getting to know each other better. In book one they were all really quick to get together (which I loved!), so I expected for them to further develop their connection here, go on dates etc., but that didn't really happen.

❌ On that note, what about Wilder's and Roman's background? We got to see Alek's family, and even some of Hades' background, but the history of the other two is still a bit of a mystery - especially the entire dire wolf thing? I was/am super confused, cause while reading I was thinking that their background would probably come up in the third book - but then the author's note at the end of this novel declares that Alek's story is "wrapped up"? I think that really drove my disappointment home, because even though the novel ends on a happy and good note, I feel like there was still so much about these characters (and especially the alphas) to explore. Obviously if an author is finshed with a story, it's finished, but it struck me as super weird seeing how little info we actually get in this book because of the political conflict taking center stage.

❌ Truly just a small and unimportant thing, but I really was not feeling the spice in this book. I don't mind if a book doesn't contain any, but seeing as the spice in Reckless and Playing With Knives was absolutely top-notch, it felt like it wasn't even written by the same author, as the few scenes we got here were super subdued. (Especially cause in the Kindle description of the book it says that it features "gratuitous kink", but there really was no kink at all? Had I not expected those kind of scenes based on the first book and this description I wouldn't have cared, but like this I felt really let down)

I think overall it was an okay read, especially if you loved the first book as much as I did and just care to see Alek and her alphas happy, but I am still severely disappointed and honestly a tiny bit shocked, cause this book felt so different in comparison to the others I've read by this author.

As much as I enjoyed book 1, this one fell a little flat and was slightly dragging at time. I didn't found the Alek I met in the previous book.

I liked the plot and learning about Alek's past but I didn't feel as invested in the story. I also feel like a lot was left unsolved or more like unsaid : especially about Roman's and Wilder's pasts/families. After waiting for this book, I feel unsatisfied and like I didn't get real closure. All in all, it was an okay read but I am disappointed.

I wasn't too bothered about continuing this one. It's softer than the usual stuff but mommy issues. There are a lot of them and the guys feel hands off in this one. There's the threats to deal with her but that's about it. This one felt very the omega is in charge. I dread to think of how Hades would be without Wilder. The panther was subdued at the family meeting and again went when his mother called. Wilder was still my fave of the trio. I'm curious about his and Meg's relationship.

I didn't like Izzy. Even after everything was said and done she wasn't a very likeable character. She did good in the end though. There was one point where I didn't like Alek judging Izzy. I got over it so why can't you. It was ugh. I liked the forest bit with the guys just being there. The coffee with the mother felt like it was pushing it.

Let me start off by saying how much I absolutely love Wilder, Hades, and Roman. They are alpha, sexy, and will do anything for their mate. They’re all in with Alek right from the start and they adore them. With that said, Relentless is all about Alek’s growing relationship with her mates and how her backstory contributes to her major hesitations with them.

There’s more drama, delicious sexy times, and a monster in law. This book is just as good as the first and I enjoyed it tremendously.

Inconsistent storyline

Pros:
Diversity in shifters
Characters were OK the one I liked best was Roman.

Cons:
I felt Wilder fell bit flat like the author needed to put a bad boy so she threw him in there
Inconsistencies and I mean by alot
The first book the mother was killed by suicide by cops but here she is alive and well
The FMC supposedly looked like her dad reasons her mother didn't like her but long and behold she looks just like her mother when they see each other
And did the author not remember they already said I love you in the last chapter and made it seem the characters said for the first time in another?

The story felt it was written just to have another book just because. The author needs to read her own books to remember what she wrote. First book wasn't bad they didn't need to add to that.

Loved the continuation of Alek’s story. Not only is Alek forced to confront her fears and past, but she grows into the relationship with Wilder, Roman and Hades. It’s so enjoyable to read; plus the added drama of fending off personal and political and personal attacks.
I also loved that we got more of a peek into both Alek and Hades’ worlds and hope that in the next book we can learn more about Wilder and Roman as all the relationships continue to blossom.

Eh; I Wanted More From Alek

I was just starting to warm up to these wild characters and now I blinked and their stories are over. What was intended to be a trilogy turned into a duo. I do love the chemistry between our main characters, but everything was so darn rushed, and I’m just left wanting.

Aj Merlin did it again! I find myself always drawn into her stories and her characters are absolutely amazing, I loved this book and the way Alex, Hades, Roman, and Wilder grew! It was amazing
While I would love more (because I’m greedy like that) this book delivers definitely read, and if haven’t read book 1 go read it!

The characters are still just as fun and quirky as they were in the first book. The story was completely unexpected but I couldn’t have asked for a better ending.

Great conclusion for Alek and her guys. This book really focuses on the relationship between Alek and her guys. There is some drama with someone seeming to be out to get Hades and Wilder and someone from Alek’s past showing up, but I really liked seeing the “meet the family” scenes. Alek is anxious about sharing her past, but I liked that it wasn’t really dragged out. The ending is sort of wrapped up quickly, but overall this was an engaging and steamy story :)

3.25 stars.

not as good as the first book. it had some frustrating moments for me - the heroine hearing a rumor that somewhere in the city some people get hurt after rallies. and im like.... so? it literally has nothing to do with her, so i didn't get why she thought she should "investigate".
it made no sense. like, in the real world violence increases after a football game, but does that make it random citizens' job to stop?? and her "investigating" just seemed like... showing up at a gathering of poor ppl who are frustrated at rich ppl, and then beating them up when they confront her. like, yes, they absolutely shouldn't have acted violent towards her, and she was just defending herself, but 100% of the violence at the rallies was bc she had shown up to stick her nose in it aggkdbkfhrjf idk it was just SUCH a weird plotline.

and the way she kept just believing whatever isabelle told her; i didn't get why she even listened to her when it was obvious isabelle didn't like her. the heroine owed her nothing, it felt like such a break from character that she would continue to meet her and hear her out.
the book just felt... random, at times.
but the romantic plot was fine. my enjoyment was just a bit off bc of all that other plot going on.
oh, and what's up with the way "punishment" kept getting mentioned, and we're literally never seen her get punished by her mates?? it was such a tease wtf like at least include it one time if you're gonna mention it all the time.
in fact, the spice in this book was underwhelming. the first book was way better in that regard too.
i might reread the first book in the future but not this one. the first can be read as a standalone anyway.

but on a positive note, this book still had enjoyable scenes and enjoyable moments between the h and Hs. hence the pretty decent rating. i loved when one of the Hs tackled the heroine and then got all worried and ashamed and she comforted him, i loved it so much. definitely my favorite moment in this book.

Rounding this one up from 3.5.

Relentless has a lot of what I wanted: progress in the relationships, a greater look at the men fitting into Alek's life, and a little resolution as far as her mother is concerned.

One of the things I liked most was some of the emphasis on Roman. He's not as *sensational* as Alek's other two mates, so we often see him getting sort of left behind by the side characters in the book, but I feel like there was a concerted effort on Alek's, and therefore Merlin's part, to emphasize his presence and his importance. Now, that doesn't mean anything negative about Wilder and Hades. The moments we have with each of them are still fabulous, though I wish we had more of them.

I think the main reason that this floated between 3-4 stars for me is that it felt a bit rushed. There were some moments that were very nicely done, but the ending felt kind of abrupt to me, and even when something very important happened in their relationship, it was cut a bit short because the guys had to rush off for various reasons. I wanted more time to get the warm fuzzies with them, and I was kind of hoping that the bulk of this book would be emphasizing the relationship building. I wanted to learn more about Roman and Wilder, maybe even get a glimpse of Aleks with their families, and see how they all become pieces to each other's missing puzzles.

Merlin does work on their connections, but I feel like the subplot about the unrest in the city detracts from what I wanted to be the mainstage. Had the books remained a trilogy so that the politic issues and the relationship could have gotten greater depth, I think that would have been a good way to do justice to both aspects. Undeniably, I enjoyed the book, but it didn't quite inspire the same excitement that book one did.

Regardless of that, I still genuinely enjoy Merlin's books and will continue to dig into each new release.

It's sad, that it is now ending. I have read both books after one another, because I'm always waiting for series to finish. I don't want to forget the details.

So, first things first, I liked the story and enjoyed reading it. I loved the characters. Though, with Alek, it was a little difficult. I often have problems with the FMCs in books. Doesn't mean, I don't like them. But there are always some behavior or things about them, I don't like much.

In book 1 it was okay, that Alek is so much in denial and refuse to face things. It's the start of the story, and series don't tend to solve problems in the start. So, even if I was sitting there and thought, why don't you just tell them? I knew she wasn't there yet. After the end of book 1, I just thought now it will be solved.

And yes, it does. She tells them about her family in the first half of the book. Which I'm glad of. But still, there were other issues, and she still was in denial. I do get it. I'm very interested in the psychological side of the mind. And emotions aren't always logical and experiences, we all made, do shape us. So, I do understand why this is difficult for her.

And it was heartwarming to see how she opens up and the relationships between her and her alphas got closer. Deeper. I like that about the story. And learning more about the families. Well, at least, we see more about Alek's and Hades family. Not so much about Wilder's and Roman's.

Though, there were some - I would say - mistakes and contradictions in between book 1 and 2. So, it was confusing in some ways. But for me, it doesn't subtract anything from my enjoyment.

Overall, I give it still 4 stars.

Prowl duet

I waited until I finished book 2 to make a review. Now, I would have given the duet higher stars, but I was slightly disappointed that the blurbs and the story itself didn't measure up. The first book did not have the steam that the blurb talked up. There was only one scene early on that had an actual bondage scene between the omega and a member of her pack. Her being abducted and held in chains does not count. The sex scenes were a bit subpar, in my opinion. They cloud have been steamier with more details of the acts and the alphas' physical appearance as well. I did, however, like the storyline, and it was nice and entertaining. I would have liked to see more details in the story between the main characters developing relationships, Alek never even net Wilders family, at all. And he was a bit of a mystery in regards to his life and upbringing. I feel more could have been added to two of the stories better. More is always better, in my opinion. I do enjoy AJ Merlins works, and so far, this is the second duet of AJ Merlins I've read. I plan on reading more of AJ Merlins' work and do hope it gets more detailed.

I so enjoyed the conclusion of this duet. I just had to know how our main characters would solidify their relationship. Although it was a shifter novel it was more contemporary problems with a side of shifter. It was a good combination.

I loved seeing the relationship evolve between the four main characters and how they overcame the obstacles in their way. The media, those against their relationship, a monster-in-law… It was a good combination. I also loved the side characters, especially Alek’s family.

I feel like I was completely engrossed in this novel and was cheering them on throughout everything. Other than a few obstacles encountered, it was a really sweet love story. I’m so happy that this was made into a duet because I think the author had a great progression of the plot and the characters and concluded the story perfectly.

Relentless is book 2 in the Prowl series.

She picks up right where Reckless left us. It was so freaking good. I am still in LOVE with the FMC she is such a bad bitch.⠀She stands up for the smaller people and she is always just concerned about learning the truth.

I hate Hades mom she is such a stuck up bitch. Sorry not sorry.

I love that the men are still constantly reassuring the FMC of her worth.

Also thank you @ajmerlinauthor for touching on that even MEN can be pushed beyond their hard limits in sexual situations by other men. It was a short scene but I love that Hades had limits and stood his ground and stuck up for his friends Sexual limits as well. A+++

Just like the first book I ABSOLUTELY loved this book! A.J. Merlin did it again! I mentioned this for my review of book 1 but this series is amazing! I love Alek and I really enjoyed getting to see how her character developed from the first book. She learned to trust her alphas so much more and actually revealed so much about her past. I think that was definitely the highlight for me in this book was seeing their relationship develop so nicely!

I know there is so much more to come in the next book and I’m excited to see where A.J. Merlin takes it.

Can’t wait for the next book!

Relentless is the second book in the Prowl Series.

This book focused a lot on relationship building between Alek and her Alphas which I absolutely loved.

We get to find out more about Alek's past and why she has reservations about being mated. She also has to face the fears of her past when a rival family brings her mother to town in order to cause trouble and distract them in the middle of a political campaign against Hades' family.

I loved the way Alek’s character grew and developed in this book. She's still a total bada$$ and helping others, she learns not to run blindly into danger now that she has 3 men that love her.

Relentless ❤️

I'm so sad this is a Duet. I really would love more on Alek and her guys. I actually enjoyed the storyline and never found myself bored or struggling to stay interested. I love that she took time to really know what she wanted and went for it on her own terms. I also loved that Hades, Wilder, and Roman respected that. I loved the guys dynamics. The MM was hot 🔥. Maybe we can get a spinoff. I'll just have to brush up on more of AJ's books, since I enjoyed this duet so much. Playing With Knives was super good, and We Tell Lies is another ive read so I should just read all the others.

Fantastic!

I absolutely loved Alek, Wilder, Hades and Roman. They are such phenomenal characters with a bond that is otherworldly and strong.

Alek takes us through her journey of letting go of her past, her fears and allowing herself to give her all to her mates. Together they are a fierce family that will protect each other no matter what the cost.

It’s a really well written story that is action-packed and filled with drama, suspense, passion and a whole lot of spiciness. Definitely a story that kept me glued to the pages, fanning myself continually throughout, and hoping that the story would keep going even long after it ended.

Loved it and can’t wait to see where things go next!

Lots happening!

4.5 stars - lots happened in this book(that said definitely a series to read in order). This book was filled with new developments, twists and some drama. It also had all the yummyness of a why choose romance mixed with some mystery, heat, a dash of laughter and some super natural elements. This story ended in a happy for now fashion that still left me excited and impatient for the next book (I think there's supposed to be 3). Anyway very good book, can't wait to see what's next for this pack (I'm kinda hopping for a little more mundane ish relationship things, and all the heat). But very good book would absolutely recommend.

I enjoyed the first book and this one didn’t disappoint either.

Alex is a gem of a FMC. Her guys - Hades, Roman, and Wilder - are on point and oh so sexy and dreamy. She is one lucky lady.

Loved learning more about Alek and we backstory. I can see why she has her insecurities but did I agree with her actions of bottling things up all the time - NO!

Though enjoyed learning as well more about Hades, I did wish we did so as well for the other two. Hopefully the third book will do so. Kudos again for a curvy woman.

* I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

Shelf This Amazing Omegaverse

AJ can certainly weave a tale. I'm so happy to read everything she writes across the genres. This omegaverse and reverse harem is a great book. I enjoyed Alek and her insecurities about her family and past. But she has three Alphas to lean on, if she will just do that. Her doubts as the Omega with a shady history has a huge impact on her relationship with her famous and wealthy Alpha shifters. Wilder, Roman and Hades couldn't be happier with her. If only she realizes it. Eventually all secrets come to life and she sees what she really has.

I debated a long time if I would give it 3 or 4 stars. But in the end I really enjoyed the story, so 4 stars it is. I am however unhappy with the fact that there were hardly any "intimate" scenes in this book. At the end of chapter 10, when things were finally getting sexy, we just skipped ahead to afterwards. And then again in chapter 24, things were getting steamy, and then all of a sudden it was over. It makes me sad, that this book is so "clean". I wasn't expecting that. I like my books to have smut. We're all adults after all 😜

I loved Alek and her men. Once she got passed her insecurities and let them she became even more appealing to me. I thought about who is my favorite Alpha of the three but I can’t decide, though Wilder might win it by a tiny margin with his straight forward ness from the beginning. However then I think about utterly sweet Roman “Romeo” is. Then there’s Hades and his adorable yet sexy tendencies so yea hard to pick a favorite. That’s the awesome thing about reverse harem though, Why Choose? Read it if you’re thinking about it.

I FLOVED this book so much. This author has such a way with words. We learn so much more about Alek and her background and we get to understand more of why she is the way she is. Her relationship with her Alphas is growing and their bond is getting stronger. We get to see just how much they care for and want to protect her. Alek's growth as a character was amazing to see. This is one of my all time favorite PNR series and I am dying for more.

I feel like we have barely scratched the surface still and I am so looking forward to what comes next!!

I cannot wait for the next book

Beautifully written second book in the Prowl Trilogy. I loved book one so I knew AJ would bring it with this addition.

In this book we learn more about Alek and her past, meet the rest of her family and get introduced to some of her Alphas family. I love that Alek is a typical woman, with normal fears and desires. I love it when an author can write supernatural books but keep it in the human realm.

Highly recommend this series, as well as anything else AJ has written 😁

First of read book 1 before you pick this one up as they are not stand alone. I enjoy Alek and I like the guys, Wilder, Hades and Roman too. They are alphas but are really doing all they can for their mate. I enjoyed the drama from both personal and political attacks. I really enjoy this series and can't wait for more from AJ. I really hope to see more from the guys side and to see more development in the relational aspect.

“This was a fabulous second part. The first one was amazing but this second slayed it. A huge shoutout to the autor for creating a great FMC as Alex, she’s truly unique! Her attitude and well everything which is so rare btw. Talking about perfection and Hades, Roman and Wilder are the top ones! They’re absolutely epic and so sexy and pan** melting *wink wink* I would have love more spice but that would be a plus the story itself is great!”
